1970-1979: GOING CO-ED

Horizons-Upward Bound matured in its second decade, developing into a more sophisticated program, responsive to both the evolution of Cranbrook and regional economic, education, and social challenges.

The curriculum continued to be refined, offering a greater variety of electives, and several new projects debuted which strengthened students’ exposure to college. The first class of HUB graduates successfully completed their university careers, and many HUB alumni returned to Cranbrook campus in the summer as resident advisors.

Fundraising increasingly became a focus of annual operations, with events like Soulfest attracting high profile names from the Detroit community. Recruitment pools extended to more schools and HUB’s enrollment again doubled. Decidedly the biggest transformation of the program came in 1977, when HUB became co-educational and 40 young women joined their male peers to live and study on Cranbrook campus for the summer.
