SIXTY YEARS OF HORIZONS-UPWARD BOUND, 1965 - 2025

Virtual Exhibition Ongoing from April 4, 2025

Welcome to the online exhibition, Sixty Years of Horizons-Upward Bound, 1965-2025. This show traces, through the photographic lens, the history of one of the oldest and largest college access programs of its kind in the United States. An outreach program of Cranbrook Schools, HUB’s evolution both reflects that of Cranbrook and the surrounding community and reveals the influence of local, regional, and national events.

Using photographs from Cranbrook Archives, this exhibition offers a glimpse of the program and its people. Chronological visual documentation presents highlights of Horizons-Upward Bound’s six decades—the students, families, faculty, staff, and supporters that have contributed to the program’s success over the years, and the significant events that have defined its legacy. Images featured in each section were carefully chosen by Amy Snyder, daughter of HUB’s founder and first director, Ben Snyder. Drawing on personal experiences and insight, having grown up at Cranbrook and with HUB, Amy’s perspective lends particular poignancy to a remarkable story.

Beginning in the fall of 2023, Cranbrook Archives embarked on a project to digitize the Horizons-Upward Bound Records and related photographs by Cranbrook School graduate and local photographer, Jack Kausch. This exhibition represents a small selection of the thousands of images digitized, all of which are made accessible through the Archives’ Digital Collections, beginning in fall 2025.
