2000 - 2009: COLLEGE TIES

In a decade defined by the No Child Left Behind Act and a greater nationwide emphasis on post-secondary education, Horizons-Upward Bound focused more than ever on exposing students to college opportunities. Annual college campus tours outside Michigan, financial literacy workshops, and ACT prep testing were all initiated through successful annual fund drives.

Director Eddie Green addressed dual objectives of closing the achievement gap and addressing the digital divide as technology and STEM subjects trended in public education. Use of personal digital assistants for seniors and Homestead events highlighting engineering careers are just two examples of how these concepts were integrated into the HUB experience.

Community service and life skills remained key pillars of the HUB program. Students annually volunteered for Habitat for Humanity. An abbreviated form of Cranbrook Schools’ Wilderness Expedition was introduced in 2006 as an option for HUB summer students. Many of the programs instituted in this decade remain a part of the HUB experience in 2025.
