2010 - 2025: 50 Years On and HUB Today
Responding to new Common Core State Standards, Director Darryl Taylor (CS/HUB ‘70) strengthened the program academically in the second decade of the twenty-first century with new programs to support math and reading skills. Special programs such as the William Beaumont Future Medical Scholars, MISTER (Male Issues Seen Through Exciting Reading) and SISTER (Strongly Impacting Sisters Through Exciting Readings), and financial literacy workshops were instituted to address the changing measures of student success. In 2015, the Homestead Program returned.
HUB also achieved a milestone in 2015—fifty years of continuous operation. A year later, Detroit Public Schools reorganized, regaining local control from state-appointed management. Despite consolidating or closing several schools, and competing with a surge of new charter schools, the HUB program remained in demand for Detroit public school students.
When Taylor retired in 2020, he passed the reigns to Lisa Reynolds Smoots, HUB’s first female director. Smoots steered the program through such challenges as the COVID-19 pandemic and the ongoing possibility of federal defunding, as well as strengthened ties within the Cranbrook Community. HUB’s current fundraising campaign, This is Sixty, celebrates another decade in HUB’s history by helping secure self-sustaining long-term funding.
